Characters
Theseus - Theseus is the Duke of Athens. His upcoming wedding to Hippolyta is the subject of the play's opening and closing acts.
Hippolyta - Hippolyta is the Amazon Queen who marries Theseus Shakespeare based Hippolyta's character on the ancient historian Plutarch's in his "Life of Theseus," which covers the big, mythological battle between Theseus and the Amazons.
Egeus - father of Hermia who wants her to marry Demtrius
Lysander - He is Hermia's boyfriend. Since Hermia's dad does not approve of Lysander, the pair run off to elope. In the woods, he is accidentally drugged when Puck squeezes juice in his eyes causing him to love Helena until Puck finally gives him an antidote.
Hermia - She is first introduced as a disobedient daughter of Egeus. She is supposed to marry Demetrius but has fallen in love with Lysander. She's been brought before Duke Theseus because of her father's complaint as she disobeyed him. Hermia refuses to marry Demetrius because she's true to her love, Lysander.
Helena - Helena is introduced as the character that nobody loves. She falls in love with Demetrius which results in Helena being a victim of unrequited love. Although Demetrius is cruel towards her, Helena remains honest in her devotion to him.
Demetrius - He is a young Athenian man who is engaged to Helena. He abandons her to pursue Hermia whose father finds Demetrius to be the better suitor. However, she does not love Demetrius and instead loves Lysander. After the potion given to him by the fairies, he returns Helena's love.
Oberon - King of the Fairies, master of Puck, and husband of Titania. At times he is a compassionate and loving person as he tries to help the four young lovers. He is also seen as a jealous and a cunning character as he was willing to trick his own wife in order to get his way in things.
Puck or Robin Goodfellow - He is the mischievous and clever character who serves Oberon, the Fairy King.
Bottom - Bottom is a one of the Athenian craftsmen who is referred to as "the Mechanicals." (The working class men who are performing the play Pyramus and Thisbe for Theseus's wedding entertainment.)
Peter Quince - A Mechanical who performs the play.
